This coming weekend is the holiday weekend that, for most people, starts the "summer
season" on Salt Spring & the Southern Gulf Islands! Canada Day (Canada's birthday as a
nation) is on July 1st. Lots going on, throughout the weekend, and fireworks (as soon as
it's dark enough!) on Canada Day itself, in Ganges Village. Enjoy the festivities!

Looking for one of the most exceptional waterfront acreages in the Southern Gulf Islands /
Southern Vancouver Island areas? Here it is, on serene Mayne Island!
64+ acres, with thousands of feet of easy access oceanfront, two exceptional sandy bays,
private coves, forest preserve (some old growth forest, here!), plus arbutus and garry oak
groves, approx. 10 acres of pasture, with an historic orchard, some outbuildings, and with
excellent all day / year round sun exposures (east/south/west), and amazing panoramic
views of ocean, islands, and mountains (Mt. Baker plus the Olympics are viewed from here,
along with Vancouver Island mountains.
Current owners have enjoyed this quiet preserve, as a "camping experience", since the
early 1950s -- it is amazingly "untouched".
Would make a wonderful family holding, or enjoy with friends. Like living in your own
private park! Easy ferry access, or, fly in by floatplane. Close to everything, yet like
your own private island. Enjoy!

Are you keeping up on the continuing process of the Islands Trust's OCP (Official
Community Plan) review? Make sure you contact the local Trust office, and ask for their
updated review documents.
Be informed! If you disagree on any items, make sure you send your comments via email to
Ida Chong, at the Ministry in the Provincial Government, and to Murray Coell (the MLA for
this area), and copies to the two trustees (George Erhing and Peter Lamb). If you look
back at the Nov. 1st blog entry, from 2007, on my website, you will find the email
addresses for all these people.
It's your island, too!
Make your wishes known.
On November 15th, there will be a referendum, asking whether the current trustees for Salt
Spring can be increased to four. The two current trustees had wanted to simply have the
government ok this request; the government felt it was important enough to make it a
referendum.
Are you a member of the Islanders for Self-Government? You should be. Perhaps we also need
a referendum on whether or not the Island should be a Gulf Islands municipal structure,
now.
Again, be informed / weigh your options / make your voice heard, too!

The Summer Solstice arrives!
It's been a very bizarre weather year, to date. Last year was an El Nino year, and this is
a La Nina year, the follow-up. These years are characterized by unusual and often dramatic
weather events. In the constant reporting of potential global warming, one might think
that these dramatic weather storms and temperature shifts are a result of same; however,
the El Nino/La Nina events already have a weather history.
Along with the reporting of the global warming potential, there is another "potential"
being advanced by some scientists. A recent article by Lawrence Solomon, the author of The
Deniers, in The Financial Post, espoused the possibility of a Little Ice Age. The previous
Little Ice Ages, in history, seem to have been related to a lessening in sun spot
activity. In Shakespeare's time, Europe was bitterly cold, in sharp contrast to the very
warm weather that preceeded his birth. If there is a cooling trend, then this will affect
the growing season in areas that are currently the "bread basket" (both Canada and the
U.S. would therefore be affected).
In all the concern over global warming, should we also pay attention to a current cooling
trend? Our civilization might be under stress, but it might be coming from another
direction, entirely.
Be open minded, and be informed!
Meantime, enjoy the pleasure of the longest day of the year, and, if your skies are clear
where you live, look up to the stars!
It's summer!

"pasta-leeky
8 oz. gluten-free pasta
8 mushrooms, sliced
3 garlic cloves, chopped
2 leeks, chopped
4 oz tofu
2 cups soy or oat milk
1/2 cup frozen peas
1/2 cup shelled walnuts, chopped
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon chopped thyme
2 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
juice of 1 lime
2 teaspoons chopped cilantro leaves
black pepper
1. Place the pasta in a pan of cold water, bring to a boil, stir, then set aside (off the
heat) with a lid on. 2. Place the mushrooms, garlic, leeks, tofu, milk, peas, walnuts, bay
leaf and thyme in a large pan, bring to a boil and simmer for about 10 minutes. 3. Put the
cornstarch in a small bowl, add the lime juice and stir until smooth. 4. Take the
vegetables off the heat and stir in the cornstarch mixture until the sauce thickens. 5.
Drain the pasta, add it to the vegetables and reheat. 6. Stir in the cilantro and black
pepper, then serve in deep dishes garnished with red onion rings or apple slivers. (Those
not on a detox diet might like to drizzle a little hempseed oil over the top and add some
salt).

Looking for a private island paradise? Here's a beauty, close to Victoria, connected to
power from shore, with a back up generator system in place.
Main home echoes the majesty of the British Raj, with dramatic living room, library/den
with view "crowsnest", formal dining room, two ensuite master bedrooms, with study in one,
gourmet kitchen, separate breakfast room, indoor pool, guest bedroom/study/ensuite in its
own "wing", separate games room, solarium atrium feature...easy access to patio, to
decking, to garden pleasures and vistas from all principal rooms.
Four separate guest cottages, a caretaker's residence, a tennis court, a "lake", wonderful
beaches, gazebo for the sunsets, and a terrific dock (year round moorage). This is a true
"trophy property", close to all of Victoria's charms, and yet with its own private and
uniquely beautiful ambiance. Enjoy your world!

There's still time to enjoy the offer of a free appetizer or a free dessert, with any
entree, at Hastings House -- May and June, Monday to Thursday, this offer is there, to
encourage "locals" to enjoy this superb dining experience.
Check the blackboard outside Tree House, in Ganges, for the music lineup for the week --
live and lucious, nightly.
If you missed the opening of Pat Bennett's exquisite basketry works, and the paintings of
J.D. Evans, at J. Mitchell Gallery, in Grace Point Square, it's not too late -- this show
runs through to June 24th.
Jazz Saturdays continues at El Zocalo, in the Harbour Centre (formerly Gasoline Alley) --
enjoy!
Don't forget to check out the Stone Walrus Gallery -- their 50% off sale allows one to
purchase the unique treasures that Don and Nora offer. They've sold their building, and
have two years as "tenants", in order to sell off their amazing collection. Truly worth a
visit!

this!

international event. Enjoy this lovely cheese!

Are you keeping up to date on the OCP (Official Community Plan) Review process? The two
current trustees, who are up for re- election this November, during the B.C. civic
elections, have spent the majority of their time as trustees (a three year term), in
creating a new OCP, which is the first step in changing the bylaws that are Salt Spring's
form of government.
Last Fall, there were three items that were taken off the table, after several public
meetings.
There are still some very large changes being proposed by these two trustees, and these
items do affect the lifestyle choices for the Islanders.
The overall Trust document's mandate was "to preserve & protect", for the benefit of all
B.C., the ambiance of the Gulf Islands.
The current trustees, though, appear to have their own agenda in interpreting these
bylaws, and seem to be on a mission to make it very difficult for anyone to be able to
live here, unless they're extremely affluent.
The charm of Salt Spring was that "everyone" was here. Some of the changes being proposed
into "law", by the current trustees, are not, perhaps, the wishes of the majority of
Islanders. This is why the Islanders for Self-Government group came into being.
For background on the elements that were under discussion, and which were supposedly
dropped from the review process, see my October and November "blog" entries. Nov. 1st blog
entry gives you the email addresses of the Ministry contact and of the MLA for this area.
If you live off Island, it's important to either receive by mail or find online the latest
version of the OCP review. If you live on Island, drop by the Trust office and ask for a
copy of same. It's important to be informed, and, if you disagree with any of these
proposals, it's vital to attend all public meetings, if you're on Island, and to make your
thoughts clear. It's also essential to make your comments known to Ida Chong, at the
Ministry, and to Murray Coell, the MLA for this area. (Email is fine; copy same to the
trustees). If you live off Island, this is an essential response.
The Trust is a government mandated body, and the agenda of two current individual trustees
should not be taken as the "will of the Islanders". Unless one speaks up, either in person
or via email or letter, silence may seem agreement.
Be informed! It's your Island, too.

A long time realtor on Salt Spring, who has owned and operated several different realty
companies, over his almost 40 years in the business here, and who latterly worked through
the RE/MAX Salt Spring company, has decided to retire this year.
When that kind of retirement move happens, there's often a shifting of office space,
within any office, and so there will be some private office space changes, within the
RE/MAX Salt Spring office.
If you've been used to visiting me in my "art gallery" office space, on the left side of
the main entrance door into RE/MAX, please now look for me just on the right of the office
main entry, kitty korner from where I used to be.
I look forward to enjoying my new windows, with a view of the interesting Ganges scene, as
my new office space enjoys two large windows, street side. Natural light!
Two window "walls" only leave two regular solid walls, though, so I will have to stop
offering my "art gallery" to those clients who were using my former office's walls as a
display for their works. Will miss that, but will love the natural light, the play of the
seasons beyond the windows, in my "new space", and the ability to open a window and not
have to rely on air conditioned "air".
If you're in the neighbourhood, drop by and see the changes. Coffee's on me!

Looking for an opportunity on special Salt Spring Island? Here's an exceptional oceanfront
home, on easy-care acreage, with superb panoramic views, and all day sun/year round.
Sunsets forever, here, too! In the warm ocean swimming area of the Island, and zoned for
further guest cottage and studio, if desired. Currently a "high end" B & B, this home was
designed for easy conversion to a family home, and it would also be the perfect corporate
retreat option.
Master/study/ensuite "wing" is totally private from the four ensuite guest bed/sitting
rooms. Living room, library, terrific kitchen with office and walk-in pantry, dining,
welcoming level entry foyer. The home enjoys a walk-in commercial elevator, which can
whisk one to the four ensuite guest bedrooms, on the "upper level", or to the lower
(daylight/garden) level (where there is generous storage, a commercially equipped laundry,
office, workshop/studio space (artist? home occupation?), plus guest bedroom/bath, and an
exercise area. All principal rooms enjoy the superlative ocean/islands/mountain vistas!
Separate double garage (keep those classic cars!), and summer moorage within Stonecutter's
Bay. Large covered verandah style decking, on main and lower levels, expand summer living
pleasures. Private! In prestigious area of quality homes. Enjoy!
June 7, 2008.
Salt Spring Island and the Southern Gulf Islands are secondary home / discretionary
marketplaces. As such, there is a "seasonality" to the lifestyle on these exceptionally
beautiful Islands
Some people, who would love to live here "year round" are not able to -- perhaps their
jobs require them to keep that city lifestyle afloat, for a few more years. Perhaps their
children are still in school, and it's not an age group to uproot them. Perhaps they are
not able to get landed immigrant status, and so can only be here six months less a day.
Lots of different reasons why these residents can't be "year round" Islanders, right at
this moment. They begin to turn up, then, between the end of May and the end of June (if
they have children in school, it's end of June to end of August enjoyment, here), and
their arrivals on Island are the true markers of the "summer season".
Tourism is most buoyant between July and end of September, and so we find those three
summer months to be "full", and it's a great ambiance!
Already, though, we have the live music, nightly, at the Treehouse Cafe in Ganges Village,
plus the jazz evenings at El Zocalo and at Salt Spring Inn
The al fresco dining choices find their outdoor decks busy at lunch and at dinner
(Calvin's, Bocados, Auntie Pesto's, Salt Spring Inn, Moby's, Rendezvous Cafe, Harbour
House Hotel, Seaside Kitchen, Rock Salt Cafe, Mix, Oystercatcher & Shipstones).
Kayak classes are underway, sailing classes, the Dragon Boat rowers are out there
practicing, the Salt Spring rowing club is active, and all the studio tours are open and
welcoming.
Gardens are bountiful and beautiful. People are swimming in the lakes, and at some beaches
(the warm swimming water areas!). ArtSpring is hosting displays in its gallery, and great
theatre and music in its theatre space. The local art galleries in the Village are
showcasing the talents of local artists. Floatplane flights are available for "discovery
tours". The hiking/walking group is welcoming new members.
Its Spring into Summer...be a part of the action! Enjoy!

I was very happy to be invited to be a part of a conference call, at the end of May, with
a luxury real estate group out of San Francisco, with global connections.
The featured speaker was the publisher of Lore magazine, a prime real estate publication.
Salt Spring and the Southern Gulf Islands are secondary home/discretionary marketplaces,
with a rapport with Vail, Aspen, Cape Cod, Carmel, Martha's Vineyard, in the U.S., and
with the Muskokas in Canada.
The interesting thing with the U.S. realtors on the conference call, many of them working
in such discretionary markets, was their reporting on how the subprime issues are
ameliorating, and also how they only affected certain areas.
The housing "collapse", then, in the U.S., was a specific thing and not an across the
board phenomenon. Once again, it reminded me that real estate is both "national", and also
"regional". There is no one "uniform" answer.
Oddly enough, during the mid-90s, while B.C. lingered in an almost seven year "downturn",
the rest of North America, both in the U.S. and in Canada, were in a "boom" time. It took
until 2001 for B.C. real estate to start to mirror the rest of North America's rhythm.
Regional and national (or international, if one is selling property in an area with a
"global buyer" profile) have to be looked at, to get the right prescription for a sale.
For some insights from this conference call, give me a call -- am always quickly
available.
So, is inflation in the wings? Look forward to hearing from you!

Here's a super summer retreat property on lovely St. Mary Lake! Warm swimming, fishing,
and tranquility to savour! Three bed/three bath home, plus open plan living/dining/country
kitchen, easy access to lake view decking (enjoy those sunsets!), plus garden level family
room, and fourth bedroom/study. Sep. laundry. Workshop could easily be transformed into an
artist's studio (home occupation, here?) Dock for kayak or canoe! This is a private and
sunny treasure, close to all amenities, yet in its own tranquil world. Enjoy!

Don't overlook the Music and Munch recital, at All Saints Anglican Church, in Ganges
Village, this coming Wednesday. Featuring renowned musical artist, Luanne Warner Katz,
this exciting program features a western version of the marimba. Katz, now a Salt Spring
resident, has been principal percussionist and timpanist and soloist with orchestras in
Portland, Rhode Island, and San Francisco. She can be heard on recordings with the Kronos
Quartet, Oregon Symphony Orchestra, Chanticleer and a number of feature film recordings.
Her recent move to Salt Spring was from the San Francisco area where her many performances
included playing with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. This terrific offering begins at
12:15, on June 4th, and the series Music and Munch continues throughout August, weekly.
Following the recital, there's an optional lunch (tickets are needed for this, and must be
purchased prior to the performance). Enjoy!
Jazz Saturday will continue throughout the summer, Saturdays, at El Zocalo, in the Harbour
Centre -- check for players.
June 8th, at ArtSpring, finds Bach on the Rock, presenting Faure Requiem & Rutter Gloria.
It begins at 8 p.m. Tickets through ArtSpring Ticket Centre (537-2102).
June 6th, remember, is the Salt Spring Jazz Festival & Copper Kettle Community Partnership
Fundraiser (8 p.m. at ArtSpring). Advance tickets at ArtSpring box office. Presented by
Salt Spring Jazz & Blues.
Long time Island resident, Johnny Bennett, has been remembered with a raconteur's bench,
outside the Ganges Post Office. "Set a spell, and tell a tale."
June 7th opens the presentation of Pat Bennett's exquisite basketry artistry, and the
works of J.D. Evans -- it's at J. Mitchell Gallery, in Grace Point Square, and runs
through to June 24th. Artists are in attendance, on the 7th, from 1 to 3 p.m. See you
there!
